Homework

In First Grade, children are still developing their bodies and minds. They need time to learn, and also time to play. After school is also a time for students to develop a good relationship with their families. I give homework for Reading and Math. I expect students to work at home for no more than 30 minutes. Here is a guideline on completing homework. Please check their homework folders every day for any homework, letters or projects. If students do not complete their work in school time, I will send it home for them to complete. Please help them to remember to complete these assignments, and return in as soon as possible. If you leave something in the folders, it is always a good idea to send me a text as well.

Reading Log

Students are expected to read at home for 10-15 minutes every day. They may read in English and other languages if their Home Language is not English. Any of the following can be logged:

  • Reading by a Parent to a child.

  • Students reading by themselves

  • Students reading with the help of an adult

  • Reading books

  • Reading e-Books

  • Listening to reading (While following the words read with their finger)

Math Homework

Students will receive Math Fact Practices to complete. These consists of basic math facts that include addition and subtraction problems. Please assist your child with this, as needed. Try not to give them the answers when they struggle, rather help them to work it out by allowing them to use manipulatives for counting (such as bottle caps, pencils or pegs.) Students are also encouraged to draw solutions to help them develop the concept of numbers and the amounts they represent. Spend no more than 15-20 minutes on this.

Projects

Once in a while, I may send a larger project home, such as creating a poster, making a model or preparing an oral presentation. Please check students blue folders for information regarding this regularly. I will also send more details on the LINE group.

Spelling

We will write a spelling test on most Fridays. Please help your child to prepare by practicing the spelling words often. Spelling lists will be sent home via the blue folder. Please remember to check the line group to know which list we are learning for each week.
